Good afternoon everyone. I am Makayla Hines, your 2025 Spirit of Mom Courtney Award winner. As a 2023 scholar, it has been an honor to receive this award and help carry forward the legacy that Mom Courtney left for all of us. Mom Courtney believed deeply in connectivity, being the catalyst for many of our relationships.

During her twenty years as our Executive Secretary, from 1973 to 1993, she created traditions that still bind us together today — from establishing Super Weekend to hosting the very first fall dinner at her home for USC and Columbia College students. Because of her extraordinary work, her boundless love for people, and her unwavering devotion to this community, she was named an Honorary Byrnes Scholar. She was also recognized by a resolution in the South Carolina State House honoring her lifelong dedication to the Byrnes Scholars and the Foundation.

This year’s recipient embodies that same spirit of welcome, warmth, and connection. She has been intentional about embracing new members of the Byrnes family, making sure no one feels like a stranger for long. From her enthusiasm at every Byrnes event to sharing her talents at Super Weekend, she brings joy, energy, and genuine care wherever she goes. I am proud to announce that our 2026 Spirit of Mom Courtney Award winner is Samira Wideman.
