Lost, Helplessly
Brent McDonald, 1998 scholar, provided entertainment at the 2009 luncheon by singing his original composition “Lost, Helplessly” in honor of the experience shared by many Byrnes Scholars.
I remember thinking, why’s this happening to me
I remember sinking, falling to my knees,
Weeping out for answers, but no one seemed to mind.
Looking up to heaven, why’s it got to be his time?
And I cried, “How far will I fall? If they can’t save him
Who’s gonna save me?” But I guess you have heard the call.
You gave me hope when I was lost.
You helped me cope when I thought everything was gone.
And how could the sun shine through such a tragedy?
You are the light when I was lost, helplessly.
The day he died fell on me like a rain that never ends.
The clouds were my memory and the drops were surely tears
Falling on the kitchen floor as I thought about my life.
“Where do I go?” I need advice. Everything’s out of line.
As I cried you answered the call. You couldn’t save him
But you’re gonna save me. You just wouldn’t let me fall.
You gave me hope when I was lost.
You helped me cope when I thought everything was gone.
And how could the sun shine through such a tragedy?
You are the light when I was lost, helplessly.
I was fading away. There was no escape from the emptiness
Alone in my dark was no place to hide
You gave me hope when I was lost.
You helped me cope when I thought everything was gone.
And how could the sun shine through such a tragedy?
You are the light when I was lost, helplessly.
