Trey Capps

Ryan Sneed, 1995 Scholar, presented the Jake Salley Alumni Service Award for 2022. he Jake Salley Alumni Service Award is presented annually to a Byrnes Scholar whose life and contributions characteristically reflect those of Jake Salley, a loyal Byrnes Scholar, a devoted family man and an inspiring educator who gave untiringly of himself to The Byrnes Scholars and to others until his untimely eath on December 4, 1979.
So, what is the picture we have of Jake Salley? He was loving, inspiring, and hardworking. He was devoted, unselfish, and willing to perform any task – but not for glory or recognition. He was a person who led by example and had an unwavering dedication to this Foundation.
This year’s recipient embodies the temperament and personality of Jake Salley. This person is a quiet, dedicated scholar who does things behind the scenes and doesn’t expect any recognition in return. During Super Weekend, he can usually be found talking to new scholars to make sure they feel welcome, participating in (not just watching) Beach Olympics, and helping with the Friday and Saturday night programs.
He is always willing to give a helping hand anywhere it is needed. He is very talented and often makes us laugh. This James F. Byrnes Scholar has expanded his own personal business to allow another scholar the opportunity to grow and expand in the music industry. Doing so has not only allowed our award recipient to pass on his professional knowledge, but to also deepen his relationship with this younger scholar.
Furthermore, our award recipient has provided his professional services, equipment, and skills at many Byrnes events, often without charge, just to brighten our events and make us smile.
This person willingly has gone without the finer things in life so that he might be in a position to give to others. This was noted this year at Super Weekend when one of our Seniors shared how our award recipient gave her a life-changing gift. Our award recipient has helped feed, clothe, and support many scholars over the years. And many who receive these gifts never know that he is the giver of such gifts.
He is a dedicated family man. He and his wife have opened their home and welcomed scholars and alumni for dinner and overnight stays. He often brings his Dad to Byrnes events, once again showing that the Byrnes Foundation is a true family and everyone is welcome.
The Jake Salley Alumni Service Award is given annually to someone whose life and contributions reflect those of Jake Salley – a loyal Byrnes Scholar, devoted family person, and someone who gave of himself. Trey Capps’ life and contributions as listed above meet the high bar set by Jake Salley, and we are proud to name him as the newest recipient of this honorable award.
